If you weren't in class, or if you did not finish...Read 'biomagnification' resource and the 'methyl mercury in the environment' in the student resources. Then hand write the questions on the Biomaginfication worksheet in the student resources.

for Tomorrow

Quiz on point vs non point pollution Make sure to bring in all the data from one of the three (Biv/taxa/impervious; surface data;or google map watershed land use data). You will have time to produce a rough graph. These people will have to share their data and conclusions with the person that is doing the fourth part(summary of overall evidence-which includes: How the data affects their decision; Which river they will choose to develop and why; What methods can be employed to minimize the negative impacts of the development.

Tuesday homework

Finish looking at google maps and determine how land is used in each watershed (which businesses -clean and possibly dirty, municipal, sewage treatment, agriculture, residential or natural) the person in charge of this part of the project will have to make a data table and a pie graph to summarize the data. Make sure you know which of the four parts of the project you are responsible for: Watershed land use; Macroinvertebrate (taxa or BIV as assigned); calculations of impervious surfaces; Reccomendations for the developer.

Be prepared to identify organisms from our trip yesterday. Remember to save data from both rivers as we will be comparing the data and presenting our results.

BIV and Taxa method

Know how to do both the BIV method and the taxa method for a quiz. Be able to compare them and their effectiveness to predict water quality. How must the study be done to be valid?

Monday

If you were not in then get the notes from someone. There is a quiz on the taxa or species richness method on Monday. Don't forget your Ipad, Monday in class you need to memorize the macroinvertebrates from the macroinvertebrate powerpoint we looked at. There will be a quiz on it Tuesday before we go out. Dress accordingly to collect bugs on Tuesday, old sneakers, shorts and a change of clothes in case you fall in.

There is a quiz tomorrow on abiotic (nonliving) vs. biotic factors (living). Dress to go out walking We will be near, but not in the water.

Since dissolved oxygen is the most important abiotic factor, come up with a list of factors that affect dissolved oxygen in aquatic systems. Determine if they make them increase or decrease the dissolved oxygen levels. Come in Tuesday ready to go out , but not necessarily into the water.

Welcome to the class. I hope you learn a lot about the ecology of lakes, rivers and the ocean. In the good weather we go out and investigate the river, stream and pond nearby. Take good notes and participate and you will be successful and have fun too.

The final for seniors is on the entire semester of material. All other students will be taking a quiz on the taxa method and the Ave biotic index method learned in class.
